Location: This role will have a hybrid schedule, working 3 days/week in our Chicago, IL, location.

Vault is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Sr. Complex Casualty Claims Adjuster to join our team. This position will be responsible for managing complex casualty claims for both commercial and high-net-worth personal lines. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in claims adjusting, excellent problem-solving skills, and a deep understanding of complex liability issues. This role requires a strategic and hands-on approach to managing high-value claims from initial report through resolution.

Job Responsibilities: 

  • Claims Management: Adjudicate complex litigated high-net-worth primary and excess liability claims, group excess liability claims, and complex commercial liability claims reflecting the highest degree of technical complexity. Handle claims from inception to resolution, ensuring timely, accurate, and fair resolution.
  • Coverage Analysis: Review and analyze applicable policies to identify relevant policy provisions and validate coverage. Draft appropriate coverage position letters.
  • Investigation & Evaluation: Lead thorough investigations into claims, including gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and coordinating with external experts (e.g., accident reconstructionists, medical professionals, and attorneys). Evaluate liability and damages to determine appropriate settlement amounts.
  • Negotiation & Settlement: Negotiate settlements with policyholders, claimants, and legal counsel. Maintain a focus on achieving favorable outcomes while managing costs.
  • Risk Assessment & Reporting: Regularly assess and report on the company's potential risk exposure, advising management on trends and emerging issues related to complex claims. Develop strategies to mitigate risks and improve claim resolution processes.
  • Collaboration: Effectively communicate with underwriting and product development to address issues affecting product lines. Promptly communicate with senior leadership to advise of adverse case developments. Manage any TPA relationships.
  • Litigation Management: Manage litigation nationwide against insureds; appoint, direct, and manage defense counsel. Complete legal bill review. Assist in discovery, depositions, and trial preparation as necessary.
  • Client and Broker Relationships: Maintain relationships with high-net-worth clients, brokers, and agents, ensuring clear, professional, and proactive communication. Keep clients informed and guide them through the claims process.
  • Claims File Management: Ensure accurate and timely documentation of claims files in compliance with company standards.
  • Maintain detailed records of all claim-related activities, including communications, investigations, and settlement negotiations.


Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience: 10+ years of experience in claims adjusting, with a focus on litigated complex casualty claims in both commercial and high-net-worth personal lines. Prior experience in handling claims involving liability, property damage, and bodily injury is required.
  • Knowledge: Deep understanding of insurance coverage, claims process, and policy provisions related to casualty insurance. Familiarity with legal and regulatory frameworks governing casualty claims and the ability to assess complex legal issues.
  • Skills: Strong negotiation, communication, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple complex claims simultaneously while adhering to deadlines. Expertise in analyzing complex claims data, drafting reports, and presenting findings clearly.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Professional Liability, Commercial Media, and E&S Commercial Lines Excess coverages.
  • Familiarity with reinsurance principles and reporting structures.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • CPCU, AIC, or other relevant insurance designations.

Salary Description:
$115,000-150,000
